Portrait of Ginevra de'Benci

Ginevra de'Benci was truly an aristocratic lady from 15th century, Florence. The portrait of her was beautifully painted by painter Leonardo di Ser Piero da Vinci in oil on wood. This is one of the fine art paintings which was acquired in 1967 by Washington's National Gallery of Art. Ginevra was a noblewoman from Florentine who married Luigi di Bernardo Niccolini in 1474, when she was only sixteen years old. In the portrait, although the young lady looks extremely beautiful but there is nil impression of smile. Her gaze though seems to be simple and straightforward but in reality it is very ambiguous to the viewer.  Amazingly, at the back of this painted art, there is a wreath of laurel and palm that perfectly encircles Juniper sprig and it is integrating Latin inscription `virtutem forma decorat' which highly depicts that `virtue is adorned by the beauty'.The fingerprints of the painter which are remarkably seen on the painting will allow the viewer to realize that how the painter has made use of both his hands as well as brush to blend the fascinating  shade of colors and form innovative edges that are truly delicate and soft. This painted art is the only one found in the western hemisphere. Although at some point in the history, almost one third of wood panel was cut down where Ginevra's arms and hands were disoriented.  However, the missing portion graciously depicts that Ginevra's hands possibly could have been either folded or crossed. In fact, the positions of her hands are very similar to the ones drawn in Leonardo's original drawing. All the fine art paintings of Leonardo are integrated with significances that are invaluable. However, this lovely portrait signifies the Renaissance symbol for devotion.
